October FoLA

Friends of Lutheran Archives (FoLA)

Don't Argue with Germans: The Curious Case of Three Churches at Neales Flat. Thursday, 17 October 2024 7.30pm to 9pm. Immanuel Lutheran Church, North Adelaide.

$5.00 donation, free supper, all welcome.

Meet an extraordinary group of German Lutherans who, because of faith and infighting, built three church buildings within a stone’s throw of each other in a farming district!

It is a feat that may be unrivalled in all of Australia. But how did this come to be at Neales Flat? Award-winning historian Samuel Doering will uncover the story of how theological differences, punch-ups along the road, and scandalous court cases divided congregations, schools, and even families in the cemetery.

Samuel Doering is a South Australian historian, public speaker, and author. He graduated from the New College of the Humanities, London, in 2021, was the South Australian Runner Up in the 2024 Rural Ambassador Program and is the 2024 HCSA Emerging Historian of the Year.

He works as a freelance researcher and as a tour guide and historian at Anlaby Station.

He has written two books: 'The Diary of Emilie Appelt, Eudunda. German. Lutheran. Woman." and "The Eudunda Family Heritage Gallery: The First 25 Years". The programme can be watched at the time, or later (often better) on: www.youtube.com/@friendsoflutheranarchives9644

Synod Endorses Ordination of Women & Men

Synod endorses the ordination of both women and men

5 October 2024

This afternoon, 5 October 2024, General Synod resolved to support a proposal from the General Church Board and College of Bishops to remove from the LCA’s Theses of Agreement the paragraph (VI:11) which prohibits women from entering the pastoral ministry. The resolution incorporates recommendations from the 2024 General Pastors Conference.

In effect this means that the teaching of the Church on the office of the public ministry remains unchanged apart from the requirement of the ordination of men only.

The proposal included the expectation that Commission on Theology and Inter-Church Relations (CTICR), together with the Church’s Pastors Conferences and Districts, will finalise a doctrinal statement on ordination in 2025, to be approved by an online General Pastors Conference and online Convention of General Synod.

The Convention began its debate this morning in prayer led by Bishop Emeritus Mark Whitfield, who called for the leading of the Holy Spirit, singing the prayer in both English and Te reo Māori.

‘We commend this resolution to God, trusting his mercy, guiding our feet in the way of peace’, LCANZ Bishop Paul Smith said.

The complete wording of the resolutions will follow shortly.
